Smithtown landlord settles income discrimination complaint

Harbour Club LLC, owner of a Smithtown apartment complex, settled a familial status and source of income discrimination complaint with Long Island Housing Services (LIHS), agreeing to pay $19,500 in damages, implement a non-discriminatory fair housing policy, display compliance with fair housing laws, and undergo fair housing training, following incidents where testers posing as Section 8 voucher holders were subjected to discriminatory credit score and income requirements, highlighting issues with the acceptance of housing vouchers; LIHS calls for federal protection of source of income as a class under the Fair Housing Act.
