Everything We Know About the Sweeping New Housing Discrimination Lawsuit


A sweeping lawsuit has been filed against nearly 90 New York City brokerages and property owners, including major firms like Compass, the Corcoran Group, and Century 21, accusing them of widespread discrimination against renters using Section 8 housing vouchers. The lawsuit, based on a yearlong investigation by the watchdog group Housing Rights Initiative, reveals that brokers and landlords frequently reject voucher applicants, despite it being illegal to do so. Undercover investigators recorded 477 phone conversations, with agents rejecting housing vouchers in 48 percent of those calls. The lawsuit aims to hold these entities accountable for violating the law and seeks damages while shedding light on the urgent need to address voucher discrimination, especially in wealthier, predominantly white neighborhoods.
