Concern for Independent Living, a nonprofit focused on affordable housing, has sued the Town of Southampton for blocking its planned Liberty Gardens project, which would provide 50 units of affordable and supportive housing, including for veterans. The lawsuit alleges that the town’s denial of the project violated multiple laws, including the Fair Housing Act, due to discrimination against individuals with mental health disabilities. Despite initially supporting the project, the town later rejected it, citing environmental concerns, but Concern claims this was due to community resistance to lower-cost housing in the upscale area.
